How Korean restaurants work
You seat yourself unless someone directs you. Water and banchan are free. You call staff with 여기요, order by dish name plus a count, and usually pay at the counter on the way out. How do you say “not spicy” in Korean?
안 맵게 해 주세요 (an maepge hae juseyo) means “please make it not spicy.” 덜 맵게 (deol maepge) is “less spicy.” Many stews cannot be made fully mild, so ask for a non-red dish if heat is a problem.
How do you call a waiter in Korea?
Say 여기요 (yeogiyo, “over here”) at a normal speaking volume, or press the call button on the table. It is polite; there is no need to wait to be noticed.
Do you tip in Korean restaurants?
No. Tipping is not practiced and can cause confusion. Pay the listed price at the counter; card is accepted almost everywhere.
How do you ask for more side dishes in Korean?
반찬 더 주세요 (banchan deo juseyo). Refills of banchan are free and expected in most Korean restaurants.
