제삿밥

Rice for ancestors

The bowl that is offered, not eaten first — jesa rice as a social fact.

A place at the table

On ancestral rite days a bowl of rice and soup is set for the dead. You do not start eating before the ritual sequence. This is not superstition you must adopt; it is why rice is never “just a side” in Korean. See jesa and rice-culture.
