🚄 Korail Pass: when it pays off
A Korail Pass can win if you ride long-distance trains several times in a few days. A single Seoul–Busan return often still cheaper as two KTX tickets. Always reserve seats — the pass is not a walk-on guarantee on peak Fridays.
Who: typically non-residents. Buy via the Korail / Let’s Korail English site and passport. Rules change — read the current foreigner pass page before you pay.
KTX is the time saver (Seoul–Busan about 2h 20m). ITX-Cheongchun to Chuncheon is scenic and slower. Mugunghwa is the cheap uncle of the network.
Reserve in the Korail app or machines even with a pass. Peak Seollal/Chuseok weeks sell out. See also
KTX how-to.
City transport (subway, buses) is T-money, not Korail Pass.
Gimpo–Jeju is a plane, not Korail. Do not mix that into a “rail pass math” spreadsheet.
