Korean keyboard layout (두벌식) — how to type Hangul A1

The layout
The Korean standard is 두벌식 (2-set): 14 consonants under the left hand, 10 vowels under the right. Tensed consonants and ㅒ ㅖ are Shift. You never type a finished syllable — you type jamo in speaking order and the IME builds the block.

How syllables assemble
- 한 = g ㅎ + k ㅏ + s ㄴ
- 글 = r ㄱ + m ㅡ + f ㄹ
- Compound vowels are two keys: ㅘ = h ㅗ + k ㅏ, ㅢ = m + l
- Double batchim: 닭 = ㄷ ㅏ ㄹ ㄱ — the IME stacks ㄺ automatically
- Typing a vowel next “steals” the batchim: 한 + k → 하나. That is correct behavior, not a bug.
Enable a Korean keyboard
- Windows 11: Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language → 한국어 → Microsoft IME. Toggle Korean/English with the right Alt (한/영) or Win+Space.
- macOS: System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → + → Korean → 2-Set Korean. Switch with Caps Lock or Ctrl+Space.
- iPhone: Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard → Korean → Standard (or 10-key 천지인). Switch with the globe key.
- Android: Gboard → Languages → Add keyboard → 한국어 → 2-Bulsik. Long-press space to switch.
Phone keyboards: 천지인
Many Korean phones use 천지인 (heaven-earth-person): three vowel strokes ㅣ · ㅡ build every vowel, consonants double-tap to aspirate. It is fast once learned, but the 2-set layout transfers to desktops, so learn 2-set first.
