Fares rose from ₩1,400 to ₩1,550 in June 2025 and have held through 2026. Busan, Daegu and other cities run their own systems: Busan is about ₩1,600 for a one-zone card ride.

Transfer rules (the part first-timers get wrong)

Tap in and tap out, every time. Subway gates both ways; buses on boarding and on the rear reader when you get off. No tap-off on a bus = no transfer discount and the system may charge the route maximum.
Free transfer window: 30 minutes from your tap-out to the next tap-in (60 minutes between 21:00 and 07:00). Up to four transfers, five rides, on one fare.
Subway↔subway inside the gates is not a transfer — it is one ride. Only leaving through a gate and re-entering counts.
Bus → same bus number does not earn a discount. Bus → a different route or the subway does.
Distance still counts across transfers. A bus + subway combo of 18 km costs ₩1,550 + ₩200, not two base fares.

Seoul fares 2026 — FAQ

How much is the Seoul subway in 2026?
The adult base fare is ₩1,550 with a T-money or other transit card and ₩1,650 for a single-journey ticket (plus a ₩500 deposit you get back). Rides over 10 km add ₩100 per 5 km; over 50 km, ₩100 per 8 km.
Can I tap my foreign Visa or Mastercard at the subway gate?
No. Seoul gates accept Korean transit cards (T-money, Cashbee, WOWPASS transit wallet, Climate Card) — not foreign contactless bank cards or Apple Pay. Ticket machines at about 220 stations do accept foreign cards for single tickets, but the fastest route is a ₩3,000 T-money card topped up with cash.
How do free transfers work?
Tap out, then tap in on the next bus or subway within 30 minutes (60 minutes between 21:00 and 07:00). Up to four transfers count as one journey; you pay only the distance surcharge, never a second base fare. Cash and single tickets never get the discount.
Is there an unlimited day pass for tourists?
Yes — the Climate Card short-term pass: 1 day ₩5,000, 2 days ₩8,000, 3 days ₩10,000, 5 days ₩15,000, 7 days ₩20,000 (plus ₩3,000 for the card). Unlimited Seoul subway and Seoul city buses; not valid on the AREX express, Shinbundang Line, red wide-area buses or outside Seoul. It pays off from about 3–4 rides a day.
What happens if I forget to tap out?
Subway: the gate will not open on your next tap until staff clear it and charge the maximum fare for the earlier ride. Bus: you lose the transfer discount and may be charged the route maximum on your next tap. Always tap the rear reader when leaving a bus.
Do children ride free?
Under 6 ride free (up to three per adult). Children 6–12 pay ₩550 and youths 13–18 pay ₩900, but only on a card registered for their age at a convenience store; an unregistered card charges the adult fare.
Is the bus cheaper than the subway?
Marginally: ₩1,500 for blue and green buses versus ₩1,550 on the subway, and village buses are ₩1,200. Because transfers between them are free, mixing modes on one card is the cheapest way to move around Seoul.
