The second cleanse: gentler than you think it should be
A low-pH water-based cleanser removes sweat, water-soluble grime and whatever the oil cleanse left behind. It should leave skin comfortable, never squeaky — that tight, clean feeling is the sound of a damaged barrier.
Why low pH
Skin's surface sits slightly acidic. Traditional alkaline soaps disrupt that and take time to recover from. Korea's shift to gel and amino-acid cleansers formulated near skin's own pH is one of the quieter but more consequential changes in modern skincare.
Squeaky is not clean
That tight post-wash feeling means the cleanser has taken barrier lipids along with the dirt. If your skin feels like it urgently needs moisturiser the moment you towel off, the cleanser is too harsh.
Water temperature
Lukewarm. Hot water strips efficiently and is a common cause of the winter tightness people blame on their moisturiser.
In the morning
One gentle cleanse, or just water if your skin is dry or reactive. You cleansed thoroughly the night before, and your pillow is not that dirty.

What is the 10-step Korean skincare routine?
The 10-step Korean skincare routine is a layered framework popularized in Korea: oil cleanser, water cleanser, exfoliant, toner, essence, serum or ampoule, sheet mask, eye cream, moisturizer and sunscreen. It's a customizable menu, not a daily mandate, and most people use only the steps their skin needs.
Do I really need to double cleanse?
At night, if you wear sunscreen or makeup — yes. Water-based cleansers cannot break down water-resistant sunscreen, so a single cleanse leaves a film behind. In the morning, one gentle cleanse or just water is plenty.
