Korean toner: a hydration step, not an astringent

⏱ 1 min read
Quick answer: A Korean toner is a watery first hydration layer applied to damp skin and pressed in with your palms. It is not the astringent Western toners once were. Optional in principle, genuinely useful if your skin feels tight after cleansing.

Apply to damp skin

Humectants pull water from whatever is available. On damp skin that is the water on the surface; on bone-dry skin in dry air it can be moisture from deeper in your skin. Applying to damp skin is the whole trick, and it is free.

Press, do not wipe

Decant into your palms and press it in rather than dragging it across your face with a cotton pad. Less waste, less friction, and none of the tugging that reactive skin objects to.

The 7-skin method

Layering the same hydrating toner up to seven times, pressing each layer in before the next. It builds hydration without a heavy cream and suits dehydrated skin well. Seven is a guide — three does most of the work.

Choosing one

Look for glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol or beta-glucan high in the list. Avoid denatured alcohol high in the list if your skin is dry or reactive.
