K-BeautyLibrary › Myths vs evidence

Does paying more get you better skincare?

⏱ 1 min read
Quick answer: Often not. Price reflects packaging, marketing, brand positioning and retail margin as much as formulation. Korea's drugstore tier is unusually strong precisely because its manufacturing base serves both ends of the market — the same contract manufacturers frequently produce for budget and premium brands alike.

What you are paying for

The cost of the actives in a typical facial product is a small fraction of its retail price. Packaging, advertising, retail margin and brand equity account for far more. That is not a scandal, but it does mean price is a poor proxy for efficacy.

Why Korean drugstore products punch above their price

Korea's cosmetics industry runs on large contract manufacturers such as Cosmax and Kolmar, which produce for brands across the entire price range. A budget brand and a premium one can be formulating with the same expertise and the same facility.

Where paying more can be worth it

Genuinely better packaging for unstable actives such as vitamin C and retinoids, elegant textures that make you actually use the product, and formulations with higher-cost ingredients like well-made peptides. Those are real differences.

Where it is not

Cleansers, which you rinse off within a minute. Basic hydrating toners. Simple moisturisers. Spend where formulation is hard and save where it is not.
