Korean toner vs Western toner: not the same product
They are different categories that share a name. Western toners were historically astringent, alcohol-heavy products for removing residue after cleansing. Korean toners — often called 스킨 — are hydrating first steps designed to add moisture and prepare skin for the layers that follow.
The historical Western toner
The astringent, alcohol-based toner belonged to an era whose approach to oily skin was to strip it. That product deserved its reputation for tightness and irritation, and it is largely gone from thoughtful Western ranges too.
What a Korean toner does instead
It hydrates. A Korean toner is a watery layer of humectants applied to damp skin as the first leave-on step, softening skin and preparing it to receive the essence and serum that follow. The job is the opposite of stripping.
The naming confusion
In Korean these are often called 스킨 rather than toner, and the word toner was applied for export markets. That translation choice is the whole reason for the misunderstanding.
Should you use one?
Not obligatory. If your moisturiser leaves skin comfortable, you can skip it. It genuinely helps if your skin feels tight after cleansing, or if you like the layered-hydration approach — and the 7-skin method takes that idea to its logical conclusion.

🙋 People also ask
What is a Korean toner and how is it different?
In Korea, toner (called 'skin' or 'skin toner') is usually a gentle, hydrating step that preps and balances skin after cleansing, rather than a harsh astringent. It's meant to add moisture and help following layers absorb, not to strip or tighten the skin.
Can I mix Korean and Western skincare?
Yes. Products do not care where they were made — what matters is the ingredients and the order you apply them. Layer thinnest to thickest, avoid stacking two exfoliating actives, and introduce anything new one at a time.
What is a Korean toner pad?
A pre-soaked cotton or embossed pad delivering a measured dose of toner, or of a mild exfoliating or soothing treatment. It removes the guesswork about how much product to use.
