Pearl, glitter and the wet-lid look: how Korean eye makeup uses shine
Korean eye looks concentrate shine in one place rather than spreading it about: a matte or satin wash first, then pearl or glitter pressed onto the centre of the lid or the inner corner with a flat fingertip or a silicone applicator. Pressing keeps reflective particles lying where you put them, while sweeping with a brush scatters them and dulls the whole effect.
Pearl, glitter and everything between
펄 (peol) covers fine reflective particle — mica and similar — dispersed through a shadow so the whole surface glows softly. Glitter means larger, discrete flakes that throw individual points of light. Between them sit glitter liquids and jelly or cream shadows that suspend big particles in a sticky base so they stay where they land. The finish you end up with depends far less on the colour than on particle size and on what holds it: a pressed pearl shadow diffuses light, a glitter liquid sparkles, and neither substitutes for the other.
Press, do not sweep
Reflective particles need to lie flat and sit adjacent to one another to catch light as a single surface. A brush dragged across them tips them at angles and deposits half on your cheek. Use a flat fingertip — body heat helps cream and jelly formulas grip — or a silicone applicator for loose glitter, and press straight down onto the spot you want. A slightly tacky base underneath, whether a dedicated glitter primer or the faintest touch of balm, is the difference between shine that lasts the evening and shine that migrates into the crease.
Placement by eye shape
Shine advances whatever it sits on, so placement changes the apparent shape of the eye. Centre-lid gives roundness and a wide-awake look. The inner corner and the inner third of the lower lash line brighten and open a close-set or tired eye. Spread along the whole lid, it simply reads as a shiny lid. On a hooded or very mobile lid, anything placed high ends up in the fold and transfers up to the brow bone within an hour, so keep the concentrated shine low and close to the lashes.
Fallout and eye safety
Do the shine step before the base when using loose glitter, or lay a tissue under the eye, because fallout landing on a dewy cheek cannot be removed without redoing that cheek. Use products actually intended for the eye area: craft and nail glitters are not made for it, and larger plastic particles near the eye carry an irritation and scratch risk that is not worth a photograph. Anything that gets into the eye should be flushed with clean water, and discomfort or redness that persists is a clinician's problem, not a cotton bud's.
