셋팅펌 (setting perm): the Korean salon curl, explained
A setting perm — 셋팅펌 — is a heat perm: the hair is chemically softened, wound onto heated rods and set, producing loose, bouncy curls that read best when the hair is dry and styled. It is the Korean salon default for soft volume rather than tight curl. It is also a chemical process, so the current condition of your hair matters more than the photo you bring in.
Heat perm versus cold perm
Korean salons split perms into 열펌 (yeolpeom, heat perm) and the older cold perm. A cold perm is chemistry alone, and its curl is springiest when the hair is wet, relaxing as it dries. A heat perm — the setting perm and its temperature-controlled cousin the digital perm, 디지털펌 — uses heated rods so the curl looks its best on dry, blow-dried hair. That difference explains why so many Korean styles are loose and glossy rather than tightly coiled: they were designed to be seen dry.
What the appointment involves
The stylist assesses porosity and previous chemical work, then applies a reducing lotion that softens the internal bonds. Hair is rinsed, wound onto heated rods, held while the heat sets the new shape, then neutralised so the bonds reform. It takes the better part of an afternoon, most of it sitting still. Rod size and winding angle decide almost everything about the result, which is why the consultation matters more than the reference image — bring several, and be specific about where you want the volume to sit.
The first week
Salons commonly ask you not to wash for a day or two while the new shape settles, and to avoid tying, clipping or sleeping on the curl in a way that flattens it. After that, a gentle shampoo, a mask on the ends every few washes and a leave-in cream or light oil applied while damp will keep the curl defined. Rough towel-drying and daily hot tools undo the look faster than anything else. Air-drying or a diffuser gives the soft, dry-set finish the perm was cut for.
Honest limits
A perm is chemistry performed on a material that does not renew itself. Heavily bleached, very fine or previously straightened hair is a poor candidate, and a good stylist will strand-test or decline. Results vary considerably with thickness and density — the same rods do not give the same curl on everyone. The regrowth line becomes visible after a few months, which means committing to touch-ups or growing it out. If your hair is already fragile, say so directly rather than hoping the appointment goes well.
