매직 (magic) straight perm: what Korean salons actually do

A magic straight perm softens the hair's internal bonds with a reducing agent, presses the hair flat with a straightening iron, then re-sets the bonds so the hair stays straight until it grows out. It is a structural change rather than a blow-dry, which is why it lasts and why it is demanding on the hair. 볼륨매직 is the variant that keeps lift at the roots instead of pressing everything flat.

Not a blow-dry

매직 (maejik) straightening works in three stages: a reducing agent softens the bonds inside the strand, a straightening iron presses the hair flat while it is in that softened state, and a neutraliser fixes the new shape. The change is permanent for the hair that has been treated — it does not wash out and does not revert in humidity, which is the entire appeal. It also means the only way back is growing it out, so the decision deserves more thought than a styling choice.

볼륨매직 and the flat crown

Pressing every strand flat from root to tip produces a helmet effect nobody asks for, so Korean salons developed 볼륨매직 (volume magic): the roots keep body while the lengths are straightened. Some clients pair straightened mid-lengths with a setting perm on the ends for a soft curve. If you have fine hair and a tendency to flat roots, raise it at the consultation — whether you get volume magic or a straight magic is decided before any chemistry touches your head, and cannot be adjusted afterwards.

What it costs the hair

Reduction chemistry plus sustained iron heat is one of the harder things you can do to a strand. Bleached, highlighted or previously permed hair is often unsuitable, and a stylist who refuses or insists on a strand test is doing you a favour. Afterwards the hair is more porous and less forgiving of further heat. Plan chemical services in a deliberate order, with gaps between them, and disclose everything done to your hair over the past year, box colour and home toners included.

Aftercare that actually matters

For the first day or two, keep the hair loose and straight — no tight ponytails, no clips, no tucking behind the ears, since a kink set into freshly treated hair can persist. Salons usually specify when you may wash. After that it is unglamorous maintenance: a mild, low-sulfate shampoo, a conditioning mask regularly, heat protectant on the rare occasions you use tools, and a trim schedule for the ends. The straightness needs no effort; keeping the hair glossy rather than flat does.
