Hair does not drink water in any useful sense; products simply hold a little water in and keep the surface slippery. Humectants such as glycerin and panthenol, oils and fatty alcohols, and cationic conditioning agents like behentrimonium chloride all contribute — the last of these binds to damaged, negatively charged spots on the cuticle and does most of the work people describe as softness. Flexible hair breaks less when combed, and less mechanical breakage is the practical benefit hiding behind the vocabulary.

Reading your own hair, cautiously

The folk diagnosis runs like this: hair that feels stiff, straw-like and snaps dry has had too much protein, while hair that is limp, gummy and holds no shape has had too much conditioning. Both descriptions are recognisable and both are non-specific. Buildup, hard water, heat damage and a bad haircut produce the same complaints. Before rebalancing anything, try a clarifying wash and see what remains — a surprising number of protein-overload diagnoses turn out to be residue. Treat the framework as a hypothesis, not a result.

How the Korean shelf handles it

Korean damaged-hair lines — look for 손상모 (sonsangmo, damaged hair) — usually blend both approaches into a single product rather than making you alternate. Ampoules and masks tend to be protein-forward, everyday conditioners emollient-forward, and salon treatments layer several steps with heat. A workable routine is a conditioning mask most washes, a protein-containing ampoule now and then, and honest attention to what changes. If nothing changes either way, the limiting factor is probably heat, bleach or friction, and no bottle addresses those.
