The Sheet Mask
The sheet mask is a single-use, face-shaped sheet drenched in serum or essence. Affordable, photogenic, and easy to use, it became one of the most recognizable symbols of K-beauty worldwide.
What it is
A sheet mask is a thin sheet cut to fit the face, with openings for the eyes, nose, and mouth, that is saturated with a liquid treatment such as essence or serum. It is left on the skin for roughly 10 to 20 minutes, then removed, with any remaining product typically patted into the skin rather than rinsed off. While face masks have a long history across many cultures, the modern single-use serum-soaked sheet became strongly associated with Korean skincare during its global rise in the 2010s.
How it works
The sheet acts as an occlusive layer that holds the treatment against the skin and slows evaporation, giving active ingredients more contact time. This boost in hydration and absorption is the main appeal. Sheets are made from materials such as nonwoven fabric, cellulose, hydrogel, or bio-cellulose, which differ in how closely they cling and how much serum they hold.
Why it became iconic
Sheet masks are inexpensive, portable, and require no skill, making them an easy entry point into K-beauty routines. Their dramatic, somewhat eerie appearance also made them highly shareable on social media, which amplified their popularity and helped cement them as a visual shorthand for Korean skincare.
