The Cushion Compact
The cushion compact reimagined liquid base makeup as a portable, mess-free format by soaking it into a sponge. It is one of the most distinctly Korean beauty inventions of the modern era.
Origin
The cushion compact is widely credited to South Korean cosmetics group Amorepacific, which introduced the format in 2008 through its IOPE Air Cushion. According to the company's own published accounts, researchers seeking a fluid that would not run drew inspiration from ink-soaked stamp pads, testing many sponge materials before settling on a design that could hold liquid product and release it gradually. The format quickly spread across Korean brands and then globally, with many Western houses introducing their own cushion products in the 2010s.
How it works
Inside the compact, a porous, sponge-like insert is saturated with a liquid foundation, sunscreen, or tinted base. A separate applicator puff presses into the sponge, picks up a measured amount of product, and is then dabbed onto the skin. The sponge's many fine cells help hold the fluid and meter how much transfers with each press, which is what makes the format feel controlled and buildable rather than runny.
Why it caught on
Cushions bundle several steps and benefits into one portable object: coverage, hydration, and often sun protection in a single dab-on motion, with a refillable insert and a built-in mirror. The lightweight, dewy finish associated with cushions aligned with the popular Korean preference for fresh, luminous-looking skin, helping the format become a signature of K-beauty.
