Zinc oxide: the mineral filter, and what Korea does with it
Zinc oxide is a mineral filter that sits on skin and scatters, reflects and partly absorbs UV across both UVB and UVA. It is very well tolerated, which makes it a common choice for sensitive and reactive skin — the trade-off is a white cast and a heavier feel than modern organic filters.
How it works
As a mineral particle it works largely at the surface, and it protects mainly by absorbing UV rather than by bouncing it away — measured reflection across the UV range is only a few per cent. What it does scatter strongly is visible light, which is a different matter and the source of the white cast. Its protection spans UVB and much of the UVA range, making it genuinely broad-spectrum on its own.
The tolerance argument
Because it is inert and stays largely on the surface, it rarely causes stinging or reaction. For reactive skin, for post-procedure skin, and for children, this is a real advantage that the elegance of newer filters does not override.
The white cast problem
The same particles that scatter UV also scatter visible light, which is what leaves a whitish or greyish film. Korean formulators work around this with particle size, dispersion technology and tinted versions, but no mineral sunscreen is entirely invisible on deeper skin tones.
Hybrid formulas
Many Korean sunscreens combine a modest amount of zinc oxide with organic filters — the hybrid approach. It keeps some of the tolerance benefit while letting organic filters carry the protection load, so the texture stays wearable.
