Titanium dioxide: the other mineral filter
Titanium dioxide is a mineral UV filter that is strong in the UVB and short UVA range but weaker in long UVA. That is why it is nearly always paired with zinc oxide or with organic filters rather than used alone, and why it leaves a whiter cast than most people expect.
Strong where zinc is weaker, weak where zinc is stronger
Titanium dioxide absorbs and scatters efficiently in the UVB and short UVA range, but its coverage falls away in long UVA — precisely the range most associated with pigmentation. Zinc oxide covers that range better. The two are complementary, which is why mineral sunscreens usually list both.
Very high visible whiteness
Titanium dioxide is a brilliant white pigment — it is the same material used in white paint. Even at cosmetic particle sizes it scatters visible light strongly, so it contributes more cast than zinc oxide at comparable levels.
Where it appears in Korean products
More often in cushion foundations, BB creams and tinted sun products, where the whiteness can be offset by pigment, than in clear facial sunscreens. Korea's clear sunscreens lean on organic filters instead.
Tolerance
Like zinc oxide it is inert and very well tolerated, which keeps it relevant for sensitive skin and for children's products despite the cosmetic drawback.
