Avobenzone: the UVA filter that needs a partner
Avobenzone has long been the main organic UVA filter available in the United States — zinc oxide sits alongside it, and bemotrizinol joined the list in 2026 — and it is used in Korea too. Its weakness is well documented: it degrades in sunlight unless it is paired with a stabilising filter, so what matters is not whether a product contains it but what it contains alongside it.
Good UVA coverage on paper
Avobenzone absorbs efficiently across the UVA range, including the long UVA wavelengths that matter most for pigmentation and photoageing. On absorption alone it is a capable filter.
The photostability problem
Exposed to sunlight, avobenzone breaks down measurably over a period of sun exposure, losing protection precisely when you need it. This is a well-established characteristic, not a controversy.
How formulators solve it
Pairing it with octocrylene, or better with Tinosorb S, substantially slows that degradation. In markets with access to the newer filters, formulators increasingly use avobenzone as one component of a stabilised system rather than as the sole UVA filter.
What to look for on a label
If avobenzone appears without a recognised stabilising partner, expect protection to fall off over a long day outdoors — reapplication matters more with that formula than with one built on photostable filters.
