Shipping, customs and the true landed cost of ordering from Korea

⏱ 2 min read
Quick answer: The price on a Korean site is rarely the price you pay — shipping, your own country's import duty and sales tax, and a courier handling fee are all added after checkout, and together they can reshape which retailer is actually cheapest. Import thresholds and cosmetics rules are set by your country, not Korea's, and they change, so check your own customs authority rather than a forum post. Compare total landed cost against a local stockist before assuming direct ordering wins.

Free-shipping thresholds shape the basket

Most Korean retailers set a 무료배송 (muryo baesong, free shipping) threshold, and it is designed to move your basket. Adding a product you did not want in order to save a shipping fee is a loss dressed as a saving unless the addition is a restock you would have made anyway. The genuinely efficient approach is to consolidate deliberately: keep a running list, order two or three times a year, and let the threshold be met by things already on it.

Customs is your country's rule, not Korea's

Every destination sets its own de minimis value below which small parcels pass without duty, its own sales tax treatment of imports, and its own restrictions on cosmetics. Those rules differ sharply between markets and are revised more often than shoppers expect — several major markets have tightened low-value import handling in recent years. Because of that, no figure quoted in a blog post is safe to rely on. Look up your national customs or tax authority directly before a large order, every time.

Under-declaring is not a strategy

Asking a seller to mark a parcel as a gift or to understate its value is a false declaration, and the exposure sits with the importer — you. Consequences range from the parcel being held and assessed anyway to penalties, and the saving was never large. There is a separate reason to keep declarations accurate: if a shipment is inspected, clean paperwork is what gets it released. Pay the duty, or buy from a local stockist who has already paid it.

Compare landed cost, not sticker price

Add the item, the shipping, any duty, any sales tax and the courier's handling charge, then compare that against the same product from a retailer in your own country. Direct ordering usually still wins on obscure items and large baskets. It often loses on one or two mainstream products, because the big Korean drugstore brands now sell through official stores in most major markets and discount them there. Run the comparison per order rather than settling it once.
