HIFU and 초음파 Lifting: How Focused Ultrasound Devices Are Described

⏱ 2 min read
Quick answer: HIFU devices focus ultrasound energy onto small points at chosen depths beneath the surface, heating tissue at those points while the surface itself is passed over. Korean clinics usually sell it by 'shots' (샷), which counts energy pulses and measures nothing about outcome. Sessions are uncomfortable for many people, any visible change tends to be gradual and variable, and whether it makes sense for you is strictly a matter for a licensed doctor in person.

HIFU devices focus ultrasound energy onto small points at chosen depths beneath the surface, heating tissue at those points while the surface itself is passed over. Korean clinics usually sell it by 'shots' (샷), which counts energy pulses and measures nothing about outcome. Sessions are uncomfortable for many people, any visible change tends to be gradual and variable, and whether it makes sense for you is strictly a matter for a licensed doctor in person.

How the mechanism is described

Focused ultrasound converges energy at a point, in the way a lens converges light, producing heat at that focus rather than along the path to it. Devices use different cartridges to place that focus at different depths, including the deeper fibrous layer clinics refer to when they talk about lifting. The surface is not broken. That is the appeal and also the source of the discomfort people report, because the sensation happens beneath skin where nothing can be numbed away entirely by cream alone.

Why 'shot count' is a poor way to compare clinics

샷 (syat) counting turned a clinical variable into a shopping unit, and packages are commonly built and advertised around it. The number tells you nothing about which depths were used, what energy was set, how evenly the pulses were placed, or how experienced the hand delivering them is. A larger count applied carelessly is not better than a smaller count applied thoughtfully. Comparing two clinics on shot count alone is comparing the least informative number available, and the industry knows it.

Risks, and an honest word on the evidence

Reported effects include pain during the session, swelling, bruising, and transient nerve-related symptoms such as numbness or temporary muscle weakness in the area worked on. There is a recognised concern about unwanted loss of facial fat volume when energy is placed poorly, which is not a trivial cosmetic outcome. Published work exists but skews small, industry-linked and dependent on photographic assessment, so confident promises of a specific degree of change in the look of firmness are running ahead of what the literature actually supports.

This is a medical device decision

Facial anatomy varies, and where energy lands relative to nerves, glands and fat compartments depends on the operator's judgement about your face specifically. That is not something a page can generalise, and this one deliberately gives no criteria for suitability, no settings and no recommendation. If a clinic in Korea is proposing focused ultrasound to you, ask who will hold the handpiece and what their medical qualification is, and take the decision only after a licensed doctor has examined you in person.
