Radiofrequency (고주파) Tightening: Heat, Depth and Honest Expectations
Radiofrequency devices pass an alternating electrical current through skin, and the tissue's own resistance converts it into heat spread across a broader volume than focused ultrasound's discrete points. Surfaces are usually cooled while the deeper tissue warms. Any visible change in the look of firmness is generally gradual and modest, marketing frequently outruns the evidence, and suitability is a question only a licensed doctor examining you can answer.
Bulk heating rather than focused points
Rather than converging energy at a focus, radiofrequency warms a volume of tissue as current meets resistance. Monopolar configurations send current between a handpiece and a return pad, generally reaching deeper; bipolar ones run it between two closely spaced electrodes, generally shallower. Most systems cool the surface so the outer skin stays cooler than the tissue below it. The practical implication is that radiofrequency is a broader, more diffuse form of heating, which is why it is discussed differently from point-based devices.
Reading 고주파 and 초음파 on a Korean menu
고주파 (gojupa) means radiofrequency; 초음파 (choeumpa) means ultrasound. The two words look similar to a visitor and are used for genuinely different technologies, often on the same price list and sometimes in the same combined package. Knowing which is which lets you follow a consultation rather than nod along. Some clinics sell them together as a course on the argument that they act at different depths, which is a plausible rationale and also a convenient one commercially. Both things can be true.
What the evidence will and will not support
Studies generally describe subtle, gradual changes in the appearance of skin firmness rather than anything resembling a surgical result, and much of the published material is small, short and industry-connected. Marketing photographs are a particularly weak form of evidence: lighting angle, head position, expression and even the time of day change how a jawline reads in a picture. Being sceptical of before-and-after imagery is not cynicism, it is the appropriate response to an uncontrolled photograph presented as a result.
Hazards and the reason for a consultation
Burns are the principal hazard, and they are settings- and technique-dependent rather than rare in principle. Loss of fat volume beneath the area worked on has been reported. Implanted electronic devices, metal in the treatment field, pregnancy and certain skin conditions are all matters that must be raised with a doctor before anyone switches a machine on, and disclosing them fully is your part of that conversation.
