Seoraksan

설악산 National Park is Korea's most dramatic mountain landscape — jagged granite peaks, cascading waterfalls, ancient temples, and wildly colourful seasonal displays. At 1,708m, Daecheongbong Peak is the third highest in Korea. In early October, the entire mountain ignites in red, orange, and gold — arguably the most spectacular natural sight in the country.

✅ Best for: Hikers, nature photographers, autumn foliage chasers. Best seasons: late September to mid-October (autumn) and May–June (spring azaleas).

⏰ When: Park open year-round. Cable car: 09:00–17:00 (Oct–Mar), 09:00–18:00 (Apr–Sep). Summit trails close in heavy snowfall.

How to Experience Seoraksan

1. Travel from Seoul to Sokcho by express bus (3 hours, ₩15,600). Seoraksan is 15km from Sokcho.
2. Take the Seoraksan cable car (케이블카) for panoramic views without hiking — ₩12,000 round trip.
3. Hiking routes: Biryong Falls (2 hours, easy) → Gyejoam (5 hours, moderate) → Daecheongbong summit (10+ hours, expert).
4. Visit Sinheungsa Temple at entrance — free and beautiful with a giant bronze Buddha.
5. Combine with a night in Sokcho for fresh seafood and Sokcho grilled fish.

• Cable car queues can be 2 hours on autumn weekends — arrive at 09:00 opening.

• Sokcho's Abai Village serves unique Hamgyong Province (North Korean refugee) food.
