Kaolin ClayActivated Charcoal
What it isThe gentlest of the common cosmetic clays, and the one Korean wash-off masks lean on when they want oil control without a stripped face. Kaolin soaks up sebum sitting on the surface. It does not reach into a pore, dissolve a blackhead or shrink anything — those are jobs for a BHA, if they are jobs at all.Charcoal binds things to its surface, which is why it works in water filters and why it looks convincing in a black clay mask. On skin it picks up surface oil during the couple of minutes it is there. The detox framing is nonsense — nothing is being drawn out of a pore, and a peel-off charcoal mask mostly removes your vellus hair.
