The physics, briefly

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are solid particles suspended in a film that sits largely on the surface. They protect mostly by absorbing ultraviolet, with only a small share genuinely reflected — the popular image of tiny mirrors bouncing sunlight away is wrong. What they do scatter powerfully is visible light, and that is a separate optical property from their UV performance. The scattered light is broadly white, so it lies over your own colour as a pale veil. On light skin the veil disappears into the background. On deep skin it reads grey. Korean labels call it 백탁.

Titanium versus zinc

Titanium dioxide has the higher refractive index of the two, which is exactly why it is also used as a white pigment in paint. Gram for gram it whitens more than zinc oxide does. Zinc casts less but generally has to be used at a higher level to carry real protection, so a heavily zinc-based formula can end up just as visible on the face. Reducing particle size cuts visible scattering, which is the point of the micronised, dispersion-heavy formulas Korean brands favour, but it does not abolish it. No mineral sunscreen is invisible on deep skin.

Why organic filters behave differently

Most organic filters — the ones usually called chemical — dissolve into the oil phase of the formula. Dissolved molecules do not scatter visible light, so they leave no cast at any use level. Uvinul A Plus and Uvinul T 150 are fully soluble and cast-free, and Tinosorb S likewise. The exception worth knowing is Tinosorb M, which is dispersed partly as a particle and can leave a faint haze at higher levels: much less than zinc, but detectable on deep skin. Korea permits all four, which is the practical reason Korean sunscreen often suits deeper tones better than American formulations.

The workarounds, and their limits

Three exist and all are partial. Smaller, better-dispersed particles reduce scattering. Iron oxides add a tint that cancels the pale veil across a band of tones. And hybrid formulas keep a token amount of mineral filter for the tolerance story while soluble organic filters carry the protection load. That last approach is usually the most honest option for deep skin, because the mineral level is low enough to vanish. Anything sold as fully mineral, reef-friendly or pure-for-sensitive-skin is quietly telling you it will cast. Swatch on the jaw in daylight before buying a full size.
