Which Korean base brands actually carry deep shades, and how to verify it yourself
A handful of Korean brands now carry base ranges that genuinely reach medium-deep and deep, most of them cushion-led and driven by international sales — TIRTIR's Mask Fit cushion is the clearest example this library tracks. Ranges change constantly, so treat any published list as already out of date and verify on the brand's own global storefront. Count the rungs below the midpoint, look for undertone options at the deep end, and check stock.
The pattern behind who expanded
Expansion has come from brands with heavy international e-commerce exposure rather than from the domestic mainstream, and it has arrived in cushions first, since the cushion is Korea's flagship base format and the one that travels. TIRTIR is the case everyone cites: its Mask Fit cushion widened substantially in response to international demand and was rewarded commercially, which is the only argument some brands respond to. Colour-focused houses such as Clio and Espoir sit at the wider end of the domestic market, though wider there still means fewer options than a global base line carries.
Verify rather than trust a list
Shade counts change every season and articles listing them go stale within months, this one included. Open the brand's own global site. Look at the shade ladder as a picture: how many steps sit below the middle, and how far down the deepest one actually reaches. Check whether undertone letters or names survive past the light shades or evaporate at the halfway point. Then search two retailers for the deepest shades and see whether they can actually be bought. A range that exists only in the swatch graphic is not a range.
Where the deep end still thins out
Even in expanded lines, the deepest shades usually arrive with one undertone option while the light end gets three, so anyone with a deep complexion and a cool, olive or strongly red undertone is matching by compromise. Formula development is the quieter gap: a base optimised for a light-medium complexion can look flat or grey once the pigment load increases, and finishes meant to read luminous can read chalky instead. These are solvable formulation problems requiring actual investment, and only some brands have made it.
Practical fallbacks
Mixing is normal and not an admission of defeat. Cushion refills, liquid bases and even a drop of a deeper concealer combine readily, and buying the deeper of two candidates leaves you room to lighten rather than the reverse. Pigment concentrates sold to darken a base are widely available outside Korea and work with most Korean formulas. Set with a powder matched to your depth rather than a translucent one, since many translucent powders carry enough white pigment to undo a good match with a single dusting.
