Serum and ampoule: where the actual actives live

Quick answer: This is the treatment step — the concentrated actives that address a specific concern. It is also the step where doing less works better: one active at a time, introduced over weeks, beats three at once every time.

This is the treatment step — the concentrated actives that address a specific concern. It is also the step where doing less works better: one active at a time, introduced over weeks, beats three at once every time.

Serum versus ampoule

Ampoules are marketed as more concentrated than serums, and often are, but neither term is regulated. Choose by what is in the formula and how it feels, not by which word is on the bottle.

One at a time

Introducing a single active and waiting two weeks tells you what it does and whether you tolerate it. Starting three at once tells you nothing except that something reacted.

Morning and evening

Antioxidants such as vitamin C suit the morning, where they complement sunscreen. Retinoids and exfoliating acids suit the evening, since light degrades them and they increase sun sensitivity.

Layering order

Thinnest to thickest, water-based before oil-based. If you use a low-pH active such as vitamin C, give it a moment to settle before the next layer.
