The oil cleanse: the step most people do wrong
Apply oil cleanser to dry hands and a dry face, massage for 30 to 60 seconds, then add a splash of water to emulsify until it turns milky before rinsing. Applying it to wet skin is the most common mistake and it stops the cleanser working properly.
Dry hands, dry face
Oil dissolves oil. Water on your skin or hands gets in the way of that, so the cleanser starts emulsifying before it has done its job on sunscreen and makeup. This one detail separates an effective oil cleanse from a frustrating one.
Massage long enough
Thirty to sixty seconds. Water-resistant sunscreen in particular needs contact time to break down, and a ten-second pass leaves most of it behind for the second cleanse to fail at.
Emulsify before rinsing
Add water gradually and keep massaging until the oil turns milky white. That is the emulsifiers doing their work, and it is what lets everything rinse away instead of leaving a film.
When to skip it
Mornings, and nights with bare skin and no sunscreen. There is nothing oil-soluble to remove, and cleansing twice for the sake of it is just extra disruption.

What is the 10-step Korean skincare routine?
The 10-step Korean skincare routine is a layered framework popularized in Korea: oil cleanser, water cleanser, exfoliant, toner, essence, serum or ampoule, sheet mask, eye cream, moisturizer and sunscreen. It's a customizable menu, not a daily mandate, and most people use only the steps their skin needs.
Do I really need to double cleanse?
At night, if you wear sunscreen or makeup — yes. Water-based cleansers cannot break down water-resistant sunscreen, so a single cleanse leaves a film behind. In the morning, one gentle cleanse or just water is plenty.
