Receipts, minimum spends, and why your K-beauty refund gets rejected 영수증·최소금액

VAT refunds fail most often on paperwork: the spend sits under that merchant's minimum, names do not match the passport, or the form is for a different operator than the kiosk you chose. Beauty shopping makes this easy to trip over because you buy in three stores in one afternoon. Combine items on one receipt when the shop allows it, and keep passport-Latin spelling consistent with the card.

Minimums are per merchant, not per day

A common surprise is that two Olive Young visits do not add together if they are two receipts under two transaction numbers. Ask whether they can add a later basket to an open tax-free invoice. Rules differ by operator and by store, so the answer is at the till.

Names and numbers

The passport name should match the refund form. Middle names, hyphenation and leftover hotel-booking English can cause a kiosk to spit the slip back. Have the passport in hand, not in checked luggage.

What to keep until you fly

Receipt, tax-free form, and the goods. Digital copies help you if paper tears, but some desks still want originals. Do not bin the envelope in the hotel room after you think the till 'already refunded' unless the receipt clearly shows a completed instant deduction and the staff said no further step is needed.

Refund companies, Korea Customs and your home country's duty-free allowance are separate systems. A successful VAT refund in Seoul does not automatically clear a liquid limit at your arrival airport. Check both.
