The toner from ETUDE's SoonJung range — 순정 (sunjeong, roughly 'pure and gentle') — formulated around panthenol and madecassoside at a mildly acidic pH close to skin's own. It is fragrance-free, colourant-free and built to the minimum-irritant brief Korean brands apply to sensitive-skin lines. Cheap, widely stocked, and one of the least eventful things you can put on your face.

Reactive, flushed or barrier-compromised skin, and anyone recovering from over-exfoliation. It is also a sound beginner toner for teenage skin that is oily but easily irritated. Very dry skin will find it thin on its own. There is nothing in it for pigmentation, lines or pores, and it makes no pretence otherwise.
How to use it
First step after cleansing, twice a day. Pat in with hands on damp skin and layer twice if needed. Useful on retinol or acid nights as a calming buffer applied before and after the active. Follow with a cream, particularly if your skin runs dry or the weather has turned.
