Your moisturiser is not purging your skin
No. Purging requires an ingredient that accelerates skin turnover — a retinoid or an exfoliating acid. A moisturiser, essence or oil does not do that, so breakouts after starting one are congestion, irritation or a reaction to something in the formula, not purging.
The claim is used to keep you buying
Telling a customer that breaking out is a sign the product is working converts a reaction into a reason to persist. Applied to a moisturiser it is simply not mechanistically possible, and it is worth recognising when you hear it.
What is actually happening
Usually one of three things: an ingredient that clogs your skin specifically, a reaction to fragrance or an essential oil, or an occlusive layer trapping congestion that was already forming underneath.
How to find the culprit
Stop the new product for two to three weeks and see whether things settle. If they do, reintroduce it alone. Changing several products at once makes this impossible, which is why one-at-a-time matters.
The exception worth noting
A moisturiser layered over an active you have just started can amplify that active's effect. In that case the retinoid is purging you and the moisturiser is along for the ride.
