Can you actually shrink your pores? The honest answer

⏱ 1 min read
Quick answer: No — pore size is largely determined by genetics, and no topical product permanently changes it. What you can change is how visible they look: keeping them clear of oil and debris, supporting collagen so the surrounding skin holds its shape, and using sunscreen to slow the laxity that makes pores look larger over time.

What a pore actually is

A pore is the visible opening of a hair follicle with its associated oil gland. Its size is set largely by genetics and by how much oil the gland produces. There is no mechanism by which a cream closes it permanently.

Why they look bigger sometimes

A pore filled with oxidised oil and dead cells reads as larger and darker. So does a pore whose surrounding skin has lost firmness, because the opening loses its support and stretches. Both of those are addressable — the pore itself is not.

What genuinely helps the look

Salicylic acid to keep pores clear, niacinamide for the look of refinement, retinoids for surface turnover and firmness over months, and daily sunscreen to slow the laxity that makes pores appear to widen with age.

What to ignore

Cold water does not close pores — a follicle has no sphincter, so there is nothing to shut. Pore strips lift the top of a plug and leave the rest behind; whether repeated use stretches the opening is argued over, but what they reliably do is irritate the skin the adhesive grips. Any product promising to shrink pores permanently is overpromising.
