Oily, congested skin: what to do and what makes it worse

The instinct to strip oily skin is what sustains the problem — harsh cleansing damages the barrier, which frequently leads to more oil, not less. The Korean approach is a gentle low-pH cleanse, niacinamide or zinc for shine, and salicylic acid a couple of nights a week.

The stripping cycle

A foaming, alkaline cleanser leaves skin squeaky and tight, which reads as clean. It also disrupts the barrier and leaves skin irritated and more reactive. How much oil you produce is set mostly by hormones rather than by your cleanser, so the popular "strip it and it makes more" story is shakier than it is usually told — but doing this twice daily for years is a reliable way to end up with skin that is both oily and easily stung.

What to use instead

A low-pH gel or amino-acid cleanser, once or twice daily. A lightweight moisturiser — oily skin still needs one, and skipping it is another way to drive the cycle. Niacinamide or zinc PCA for the look of shine.

Where salicylic acid fits

BHA is oil-soluble, so it works inside the pore rather than only on the surface. Two or three nights a week is plenty. Daily use of anything exfoliating on top of daily shaving is too much for most skin.

When to see someone

Persistent, painful or scarring acne is a medical matter with genuinely effective treatments. Cycling through cosmetic products for years when a dermatologist could resolve it in months is a bad trade.
