How to Store Your Skincare to Keep It Effective
How you store skincare affects how long it stays effective. Heat, light, and air can degrade some ingredients, so a few storage habits help your products last and perform as intended.
Keep It Cool, Dark, and Closed
Most products do best in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, which is why a bathroom that gets hot and humid is not always ideal for sensitive formulas. Close lids and pumps tightly to limit air exposure, which can oxidize certain ingredients.
Which Products Are Most Sensitive
Antioxidants like vitamin C (especially L-ascorbic acid) and some retinoids are more prone to degrading with light and air; opaque or airless packaging helps protect them. A vitamin C serum that has turned deep yellow or brown may have oxidized. Some people refrigerate certain products, though this is a preference rather than a requirement.
Hygiene and Shelf Life
Use clean hands or a spatula for jar products to reduce contamination, and avoid letting droppers touch your skin. Pay attention to the period-after-opening symbol and expiry dates, and discard products that change color, smell, or texture. Proper storage helps, but it does not extend a product indefinitely.
