How to Repair a Damaged Skin Barrier
The skin barrier is the outer layer that helps hold in moisture and keep out irritants. When it is compromised, often by over-exfoliation or too many actives, skin can feel tight, stinging, and reactive. Recovery centers on simplifying and soothing.
Recognize the Signs
A compromised barrier often shows up as increased dryness, tightness, redness, stinging when applying products that used to feel fine, flaking, or a feeling that nothing absorbs well. Over-exfoliation and overusing actives are common triggers.
Strip It Back
Pause exfoliants, retinoids, and other potent actives while you recover. Switch to a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and focus on barrier-supporting ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, and niacinamide. The goal is to soothe and hydrate, not to treat.
Rebuild Gradually
Keep the routine simple for a few weeks while the barrier recovers, and continue daily sunscreen. Once your skin feels calm and comfortable again, reintroduce actives slowly, one at a time and at low frequency. If irritation is severe, persistent, or you are unsure, see a dermatologist.
