How to Apply Sunscreen Correctly Every Day
Sunscreen is the most evidence-backed step in any routine, but it only works if you use enough and reapply. Applying too thin a layer is one of the most common mistakes.
Use Enough Product
Most people apply far less sunscreen than the amount used in testing. A widely cited guideline for the face and neck is roughly a quarter-teaspoon to half-teaspoon, and dermatology groups often describe about a shot-glass amount (around two tablespoons) for the whole body. Applying too little can substantially reduce the protection you actually get.
Cover All Exposed Skin
Apply to the face, ears, neck, and any exposed areas. Don't forget commonly missed spots like the hairline, around the eyes, and the back of the hands. In a routine, sunscreen goes on as the last skincare step in the morning, before makeup.
Reapply Through the Day
Sunscreen wears off, so reapply roughly every two hours during prolonged sun exposure, and sooner after sweating, swimming, or toweling off. Choose a broad-spectrum product (protecting against both UVA and UVB). Sunscreen works best alongside other measures like shade and protective clothing during peak sun.
- Roughly a quarter to half teaspoon covers the face and neck
- Don't miss the ears, neck, hairline, and back of hands
- Reapply about every two hours during sun exposure
- Choose broad-spectrum protection (UVA and UVB)

Why is Korean sunscreen considered better?
Korean sunscreens are often praised for elegant, lightweight textures that feel pleasant enough to wear daily, which encourages consistent use. They frequently use newer filters approved in Korea but not the US. Preferences are partly cosmetic; effectiveness depends on applying enough and reapplying regardless of brand.
What order do you apply Korean skincare?
A general Korean order goes thinnest to thickest: cleanse, then toner, essence, serum or ampoule, eye cream, moisturizer, and sunscreen last in the morning. Lighter, watery layers go on first so they absorb, with richer creams and sun protection sealing everything in.
