Job's tears supplies starch, proteins and coixenolide-type compounds. In cosmetics the starch fraction gives a soft, slightly mattifying finish while the extract contributes mild conditioning. Its reputation for clearing and brightening skin comes from Korean and wider East Asian food and folk traditions rather than from controlled work on topical application, and it should be read that way.
