Ethylhexyl salicylate absorbs UVB energy and dissipates it as heat, and like homosalate it doubles as a solvent that keeps solid filters dissolved in the oil phase. It is photostable and among the least irritating organic filters in general use, which is why it appears in formulas aimed at sensitive skin. Its absorption is weak, so it never carries an SPF on its own. Being oily and mild, it also helps a filter blend spread evenly, which quietly affects how much protection you get from the layer you actually apply.
