Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate is an efficient UVB absorber and for decades the backbone of Asian sunscreen formulation. Its weakness is photostability: sunlight converts part of it to a less effective form, so protection declines over prolonged exposure unless it is paired with stabilising partners. It also offers essentially no UVA coverage, which means the PA rating on a Korean sunscreen is coming from other filters entirely. It is also among the filters restricted in some reef-protection jurisdictions, a regulatory matter separate from how it behaves on skin.
