How 1,2-Hexanediol works 1,2-헥산다이올
1,2-Hexanediol is a diol with enough of an oily tail to disturb microbial cell membranes, which is why it reduces the preservative load a formula needs without being classified as a preservative itself. It also holds a little water and acts as a solvent. Regulatory classification and biological effect are not the same thing here, which is exactly what makes preservative-free labelling on hexanediol-containing products misleading rather than false. It is also mildly solubilising, so it helps keep botanical extracts dissolved in clear formulas.
