Colour-treated hair: what Korean aftercare actually addresses
Colour, and especially bleach, lifts the cuticle and strips part of the hair's surface lipid layer, leaving it more porous, rougher and quicker to lose tone. Korean aftercare concentrates on gentle mildly acidic washing, cationic conditioning, protein-containing masks and colour-depositing treatments that slow the fade. None of it returns the strand to its pre-bleach state — the honest goal is manageable, glossy-looking hair between salon visits.
What lifting colour does
Oxidative colour and bleach work by opening the cuticle and altering the pigment inside. In the process the strand loses part of its outer lipid layer, 18-MEA, the coating that makes healthy hair water-repellent and slippery. Without it, hair becomes porous and water-loving: it tangles, absorbs product unevenly, dries slowly, stretches more when wet and loses tone faster. Every later complaint about colour-treated hair follows from that single change, which is why bleached hair behaves differently rather than simply looking different.
Why ash tones fade so fast
애쉬 (aesyu, ash) and cool brown tones are a Korean salon signature and the hardest colours to keep. Cool pigments are small and wash out first, the warmth underneath is exposed as they go, and reaching the tone required more lifting to begin with. Colour-depositing home treatments — 컬러트리트먼트 — top the pigment back up between visits and slow the drift far more effectively than any shampoo labelled colour-protecting. Wash less often, wash cooler, and accept that the salon photo is a first-week photo.
The aftercare that earns its place
A mild, low-sulfate shampoo, ideally 약산성 (yaksanseong, mildly acidic), used on the scalp rather than scrubbed through the lengths. A conditioning mask most washes. A leave-in with slip and some heat protection, since porous hair suffers disproportionately from tools. Cooler water, gentler towel-drying, a wide-tooth comb on wet hair and less heat overall. None of this is uniquely Korean — Korean brands simply make the pleasantest versions of it — and consistency beats any single hero product.
What to stop expecting
No product returns bleached hair to its previous state; the realistic aim is hair that combs, shines and holds a style while you grow it out and trim. Be equally realistic about stacking chemical services, because a perm or a straightening treatment on top of bleach is where most disasters begin, and a stylist who declines is protecting you. Give an honest history of everything done to your hair, box dye and home toners included, since the chemistry depends on it entirely.
