You over-exfoliated: what to do for the next few days

⏱ 2 min read
Quick answer: Stop every active immediately — acids, retinoids, vitamin C, scrubs, cleansing brushes, all of it. For several days use only lukewarm water, a mild cleanser, a bland fragrance-free moisturiser and sunscreen. Skin that is stinging does not need a soothing serum on top; it needs fewer ingredients, not different ones. Weeping, blistering, severe pain or spreading redness are not a skincare problem and warrant medical attention.

Subtract, do not substitute

The reflex is to reach for something calming, and the shelves are full of products promising 진정 (jinjeong), soothing. Resist it for a few days. Every additional formula is another set of preservatives, emulsifiers and fragrance components landing on a surface that is currently registering everything. The most effective thing available to you costs nothing: a shorter routine. Cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen. Three products, no exceptions, until stinging on application stops entirely — which for most people takes several days rather than several weeks.

What to avoid while it settles

No acids, no retinoids, no vitamin C, no enzyme powders, no scrubs, no cleansing devices, no hot water, no saunas or 찜질방 (jjimjilbang) steam rooms, and nothing with a high alcohol content. Skip fragrance where you can, including essential oils, since fragrance materials are among the more common triggers on compromised skin. Do not use a sheet mask to soothe it — sitting a saturated fabric layer full of actives against irritated skin for twenty minutes is more exposure, not less. Do not exfoliate the flakes off, however much they annoy you.

What a bland recovery routine looks like

A low-pH gel or cream cleanser, used once at night with lukewarm water and a quick rinse in the morning. A simple moisturiser with humectants and lipids and as short an ingredient list as you can find — panthenol, glycerin and ceramides are reasonable things to see, without expecting miracles from any of them. Sunscreen every morning, because freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to ultraviolet exposure and this is not the week to skip it. Apply everything by pressing rather than rubbing.

When to stop managing it yourself

See a doctor promptly if skin is weeping or oozing, if it blisters, if pain is significant rather than uncomfortable, if redness spreads beyond the treated area, if you develop swelling, or if you see any sign of infection such as yellow crusting or increasing heat. The same applies to anything following a stronger peel, whether done in a clinic or at home. A dermatologist has options here that no cosmetic routine matches, and delay makes marks more likely rather than less.
