Tinosorb S: the broad-spectrum workhorse of modern sunscreen
Tinosorb S is an oil-soluble filter that covers both UVB and UVA in a single ingredient. It is highly photostable and also helps stabilise other filters alongside it, which makes it a backbone ingredient in Korean and European sunscreens — and, after a wait of nearly three decades, the first genuinely modern filter American formulators have been cleared to use.
One filter, both ranges
Most UV filters cover a relatively narrow band, so formulators combine several to build broad-spectrum protection. Tinosorb S is unusual in absorbing efficiently across both UVB and UVA, which lets a formula reach high broad-spectrum protection with fewer total filters and therefore a lighter finished texture.
It stabilises its neighbours
Beyond its own absorption, it helps protect other, less stable filters from breaking down in sunlight. A formula that pairs avobenzone with Tinosorb S is considerably more robust over a day's wear than avobenzone alone.
What it feels like
It is oil-soluble and used at moderate levels, so it tends to appear in fluid and cream textures rather than the very watery gels. In a well-built formula it is undetectable.
Regulatory status
Permitted in Korea, the EU and Australia at up to 10%, and in Japan at a notably tighter 3%. The United States finally cleared it in June 2026: the FDA added bemotrizinol to the over-the-counter sunscreen monograph as generally recognised as safe and effective at up to 6%, effective from 9 August 2026 and the first new US sunscreen filter since the 1990s. As of writing the first American products containing it are only beginning to reach shelves, and the US ceiling sits below the level used everywhere else.

🙋 People also ask
Why is Korean sunscreen considered better?
Korean sunscreens are often praised for elegant, lightweight textures that feel pleasant enough to wear daily, which encourages consistent use. They frequently use newer filters approved in Korea but not the US. Preferences are partly cosmetic; effectiveness depends on applying enough and reapplying regardless of brand.
Why is Korean sunscreen better?
Because Korea approves modern UV filters — Uvinul A Plus, Tinosorb S and M among them — that give strong UVA protection in light, non-greasy textures. Some markets, notably the US, have not approved them.
