Tinosorb M: the hybrid filter that both absorbs and scatters UV
Tinosorb M is unusual — it is an organic filter delivered as a fine particle dispersion, so it absorbs UV like a chemical filter while also scattering and reflecting it like a mineral one. It covers UVB and UVA broadly and is exceptionally photostable, though its particulate nature can leave a slight cast.
Neither quite chemical nor quite mineral
The usual sunscreen dichotomy of chemical versus mineral does not fit Tinosorb M well. It is an organic molecule, but it is supplied as microfine particles suspended in water, giving it absorbing, scattering and reflecting behaviour at once. It sits genuinely in between the two categories.
Very strong photostability
It holds up well under prolonged sun exposure and, like Tinosorb S, contributes to the stability of the overall filter system. Formulas built around it tend to keep their protection through a long day outdoors.
The trade-off
Because it works partly as a particle, it can leave a faint white cast — less than zinc oxide, but detectable on deeper skin tones at higher use levels. Korean formulators often use it in combination rather than as the sole filter for exactly this reason.
Where it is allowed
Approved in Korea, the EU, Japan and Australia at up to 10%, though Japan bars it from products used near mucous membranes. As of writing it is still not approved for US sunscreens: its American application has sat unresolved since 2005, and the 2026 decision that cleared its sibling Tinosorb S did not extend to it.
