Bakuchiol: what the evidence says
The claim: Bakuchiol is a gentler plant-based retinol alternative.
Emerging evidence
What the research actually shows
Bakuchiol is a plant-derived ingredient marketed as a gentler 'retinol alternative' for a smoother, firmer-looking complexion, often better tolerated than retinol with less dryness or irritation. A handful of small studies suggest comparable appearance benefits to low-strength retinol, which is promising but not yet the deep evidence base retinol has. There is no standardized cosmetic percentage. Note that, unlike retinoids, pregnancy-safety data is limited rather than reassuring, so don't assume it is safe in pregnancy. Generally well tolerated by sensitive skin.
