Microcurrent devices: real effect, temporary result
Microcurrent devices pass a very low-level electrical current through skin, and many users report a visible lifting effect straight after a session. Two honest caveats: independent evidence for the category is limited and a good deal of what exists is manufacturer-funded, and whatever effect there is fades. It depends on continued regular use — a maintenance routine, not a permanent change.
What actually happens
Classic microcurrent runs at sub-sensory intensity — tens to a few hundred microamps — deliberately below the level that makes a muscle contract. That is electrical muscle stimulation, a different and stronger thing. The proposed mechanism here is cellular rather than muscular and rests largely on a 1982 animal study of ATP production. Many users do report a visible lift straight after a session, and that is why people reach for these before an event, but independent evidence is thin and part of the immediate effect is likely fluid movement rather than tone.
Temporary by nature
Manufacturers themselves describe results as cumulative-with-continued-use. Stop, and skin gradually returns to baseline. If you are not prepared to use it several times a week indefinitely, the cost is difficult to justify.
The conductive gel is not optional
These devices need a conductive gel to work at all, and it is a recurring cost people rarely factor in. Using one dry is both ineffective and uncomfortable.
Who should avoid it
Manufacturers generally advise against use during pregnancy, with a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, with epilepsy, or over injectables and metal implants. Read your device's specific contraindications.
