LED masks — worth the money, or expensive theatre?
LED light therapy has genuine published evidence behind it, mostly from clinical-strength devices. Home masks use lower intensity, so results are slower and subtler. Red light is studied for the appearance of firmness and fine lines, blue light for blemish-prone skin. Expect gradual change with consistent use, not transformation.
What the different colours are used for
Red and near-infrared light are the wavelengths most studied for the appearance of fine lines and firmness. Blue light is studied for its effect on the bacteria associated with blemishes. Devices offering many colours are largely marketing beyond those two.
The intensity gap
The clinical evidence largely comes from professional devices delivering considerably more energy than a home mask. Home devices are limited for safety and cost reasons, so results are correspondingly gentler and slower — a genuine difference, not a marketing quibble.
Consistency is the whole game
Manufacturers typically recommend several sessions a week over months. A mask used twice and abandoned in a drawer does nothing, which is the actual fate of most of them. Buy one you will use, or do not buy one.
Safety notes
Follow the eye-protection guidance the manufacturer provides. If you take medication that increases light sensitivity, or have a condition affected by light exposure, ask a doctor before starting. One caveat the category rarely mentions: visible light, blue included, can drive pigmentation, so if you have melasma or mark easily after inflammation — more common in deeper skin tones — favour red and near-infrared and treat blue with caution.
