What is genuinely cheaper in Korea — and what is not
Domestic Korean drugstore skincare is decisively cheaper bought in Korea, along with sheet mask multipacks, large-format basics and the long tail of brands that never get exported. What is not cheaper is anything imported into Korea, luxury hanbang lines that hold price everywhere, and the flagship products of the big export brands, whose overseas official stores now discount hard enough to close the gap. Plan a shopping trip around depth of range rather than around a uniform price advantage.
Domestic brands, decisively
A product made and sold in Korea carries no export margin, no importer, no local distributor and no currency-hedged pricing. Stack that on top of intense retail competition and the gap against overseas pricing for the same item is often substantial rather than marginal. It is widest for mid-sized brands with limited export presence, and for the ordinary workhorses — cleansing oils, hydrating toners, basic creams — that nobody builds an international marketing campaign around.
Formats that barely travel
Sheet mask multipacks, large tubs of basic cream, jumbo toner refills, cotton pads and 소분 (sobun, decanted portion) accessories are cheap in Korea and awkward to export, so they either cost far more abroad or are unavailable. Household stores like 다이소 (Daiso) carry surprisingly serviceable basics and tools at prices that make the comparison silly. If you are travelling with luggage capacity, these bulky, low-value-per-gram items are where the trip genuinely pays for itself.
Where the gap has closed
The brands that went global — COSRX, Beauty of Joseon, Anua, SKIN1004 and their peers — now run official storefronts on major overseas marketplaces and discount them aggressively during sale events. During those events, overseas prices on flagship products sometimes match or undercut Korean retail. Their less famous lines are still cheaper in Korea. The lesson is to price the specific product rather than assuming the country-level rule holds across a brand's whole catalogue.
What is not cheaper
Imported Western skincare is generally dearer in Korea than at home, so do not plan to restock a European pharmacy brand there. Luxury 한방 (hanbang) lines from the big domestic houses hold price and discount rarely. Prescription products are not a shopping category and are not covered here. Clinic and aesthetic services vary enormously in price and quality, and anything involving a procedure is a matter for a licensed doctor in person rather than a travel budget.
