Every Busan local has a mental list of escapes: the Silla capital when we want history, the south coast when we want oysters and sea air, a temple when we need quiet. Here is where we actually go, which terminal the bus leaves from, and what it really costs.
Get the terminal right — Nopo or Sasang
This is the mistake visitors make. Busan has two long-distance terminals at opposite ends of the city. Nopo (노포), at the northern end of Metro Line 1, covers everything east and north: Gyeongju, Ulsan, Tongdosa, Pohang. Busan Seobu at Sasang (사상), on Line 2, covers everything west along the coast: Tongyeong, Geoje, Jinhae, Namhae.
Crossing between them eats 50 minutes of your day. Buy at the counter or use the T-money GO or Bustago app; weekday morning buses rarely sell out, but Friday evenings and holidays do. Both terminals sit directly on the metro, so start early and you are moving before the city wakes up.

Gyeongju: the one that needs a whole day
Gyeongju (경주) was the Silla capital for a thousand years and the whole city is the museum. Buses leave Nopo roughly every 20–30 minutes; about 50 minutes, around ₩7,700. KTX from Busan Station is faster at about 30 minutes, but Gyeongju Station sits well outside the centre, so the bus usually wins.
From the intercity terminal, the Daereungwon (대릉원) grass-mound tombs and Hwangnidan-gil's cafés are a ten-minute walk; city buses 10 and 11 loop out to Bulguksa (불국사) in 25–45 minutes. Both are free since 2023. The city was spruced up for the 2025 APEC summit, so signage and paths are in unusually good shape.
Tongyeong and Geoje: the south-coast run
Both leave from Sasang, not Nopo. Tongyeong (통영) takes about 1h40 and typically ₩13,900; Geoje's Gohyeon terminal is closer, about 1h10–1h25 and typically ₩9,000, straight over the Geoga Bridge (거가대교). Do not try to do both in one day — the coast roads are slow and you will spend the day on a bus.
Tongyeong is the easy one on public transport: harbour, Jungang Market, the Dongpirang (동피랑) murals and the Mireuksan cable car sit close together. Geoje is not — local buses to Windy Hill run only a handful of times a day, so rent a car, take a taxi from Gohyeon, or accept a long wait.
Jinhae in blossom week — go, but go smart
Jinhae (진해) holds Korea's biggest cherry blossom festival, Gunhangje, for about ten days from late March; in 2026 it ran 27 March to 5 April. Check Changwon's official festival page for each year's dates. Buses from Sasang take about an hour and cost around ₩6,100, running from 06:00 to 22:00.
Then the warning: millions of people come in ten days. Yeojwacheon (여좌천) at midday is a shuffling queue, and Gyeonghwa Station (경화역) has had no trains since 2006 — the carriages on the tracks are props. Take the first bus, walk Gyeonghwa at 07:00, Yeojwacheon before 09:00, and leave by early afternoon.
Ulsan by train: bamboo grove and a lighthouse sunrise
The Donghae Line (동해선) commuter train from Bujeon reaches Taehwagang Station in Ulsan (울산) in about 76 minutes for roughly ₩2,500 — cheaper than lunch. Taehwagang National Garden and its Simnidaebat (십리대숲) bamboo grove are free and open around the clock; from the station take a short taxi or local bus west along the river.
For sunrise, Ganjeolgot (간절곶) claims the mainland's earliest. The same Donghae Line drops you at Namchang (남창), where Ulsan bus 715 runs out to the cape — roughly 45 minutes between buses on weekdays and longer at weekends, so check the timetable, or taxi the last stretch and bus back.
Tongdosa: the half-day escape locals use most
Tongdosa (통도사) in Yangsan is the closest thing to a reset button. Buses from Nopo take about 25 minutes and run roughly every 20 minutes; from the Tongdosa stop it is a ten-minute walk to the gate. Admission has been free since 4 May 2023. Gates are generally 08:30–17:30, but confirm on tongdosa.or.kr.
It is one of Korea's Three Jewel Temples, the one holding the Buddha's relics, so the main hall famously has no Buddha statue — look for the ordination platform behind it instead. The pine-lined approach path from the car park is the best part; walk it slowly rather than driving to the top.

Gyeongju & Daereungwon Tombs
The Silla capital, 50 minutes from Nopo. Twenty-three grass burial mounds sit in the middle of town, free to enter since 2023, with Hwangnidan-gil's hanok cafés a ten-minute walk from the bus terminal.
💡 Enter Daereungwon at opening and head to the mounds at the back — the famous pair photographs cleanest before the tour groups arrive.
Bulguksa Temple
Silla's masterpiece temple on Tohamsan, UNESCO-listed, free since May 2023. City buses 10 and 11 loop there from central Gyeongju in 25–45 minutes, so pair it with the tombs in one day.
💡 Ride bus 10 out and 11 back — they loop opposite ways — and arrive after 15:00, when the school groups have gone and the courtyard empties.
Tongyeong & Dongpirang Village
Korea's Naples: a working fishing harbour with a mural-painted hillside above it. About 1h40 from Sasang, typically ₩13,900. Dongpirang is free and always open; the Mireuksan cable car is around ₩17,000 return.
💡 Eat chungmu gimbap at Jungang Market first, typically ₩6,500–7,000 a serving, then climb Dongpirang — people live there, so keep your voice down.
Geoje: Windy Hill & Oedo Botania
An hour or so over the Geoga Bridge from Sasang. Windy Hill is a free grassy headland; Oedo Botania is a private island garden reached by ferry, with only about an hour ashore before the boat leaves.
💡 Ferries to Oedo cancel in rough seas — phone the port the morning you go, and take the shortest crossing from Dojangpo if you get seasick.
Jinhae: Yeojwacheon & Gyeonghwa Station
Korea's biggest cherry blossom festival, about ten days from late March: a blossom-roofed stream and a disused railway lined with trees. Around an hour from Sasang, typically ₩6,100 each way.
💡 Take the 06:00 bus from Sasang. Gyeonghwa Station by 07:00, Yeojwacheon by 09:00, home by lunch — after that it is standing room.
Taehwagang National Garden
Ulsan's riverside garden and the Simnidaebat bamboo grove — four kilometres of bamboo planted generations ago to hold back floods. Free, open all hours, and reachable from Busan for about ₩2,500 by train.
💡 Come after dark for the Eunhasugil lighting through the bamboo — most day-trippers have already caught the train back to Busan.
Ganjeolgot Cape
The mainland's earliest sunrise, a white lighthouse and an oversized postbox on a low grassy headland. Donghae Line to Namchang, then Ulsan bus 715 — infrequent, so plan the return before you go.
💡 Winter sunrises are sharpest and an ordinary weekday is emptiest — avoid 1 January, when thousands arrive for the year's first sunrise.
Tongdosa Temple

Which Busan terminal do I need — Nopo or Sasang?
